BC Food Systems Network Gathering – 2012

This is the Network’s 14th Annual Conference, held this year on Gambier Island, from July 5th - July 8th, 2012

This annual Gathering is the premier food security event in the province and gives participants the opportunity to learn about current initiatives, build and strengthen alliances, and collectively advance our understanding of food policy issues. The Gathering is held in a different community each year, giving people in various regions the opportunity to increase skills and share information.

This year's theme is Reclaiming our Food Systems: Policy and Practice. We will showcase creative projects that reclaim elements of the system, and develop focused strategies for influencing the direction of food policy.

The Conference will blend scheduled workshops, presentations and activities with unstructured time and space to encourage informal sharing, socializing or quiet contemplation. The Network supports grassroots food-security organizations and the exchange of best practices in community-based projects that build individual, community and family food security. The Network includes organic farmers, backyard growers, food activists, health promoters, Indigenous peoples, academics, researchers, food and agriculture policy-makers, educators and local and provincial decision-makers.

Support Youth to attend B.C. Food Systems Network Conference!

FarmFolk CityFolk, Young Agrarians and the BC Food Systems Network are collaborating to raise money to support young food producers to attend this year's Gathering.

Young food growers often have limited financial resources and are unable to attend the Conference unless sponsored.  Less than 5% of BC's food producers are 34 and under, with over 50% 59 and up.  Food production is labour and resource intensive and it is often difficult for young people to sustain themselves. Our focus is to support the next generation of food producers to build relationships and connections to resources that will support them to grow food and thrive.

Fraser Common Farm 2013 Kids Farm Camp

A great opportunity for the next generation of farmers to sink their hands into the earth and learn about ecologically sound food production.

The cost for the one week will be $200/camper, and additional siblings will be $185/week

There will be two camps this year, each running for one week, Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm. The first camp runs July 22nd to July 26th, the second from July 29th to August 2nd.

The camp will focus on ecologically based farming, and how food production interacts with the natural environment. We will explore soils, forests, fields, edges, and the ways in which they interact through insects, water, and weeds. Children will experience food production, from natural soil amendments, to seeding, planting, harvesting, and finally selling produce to the public.
